Philodendron Micans: The plant that saved my 2020

Philodendron Micans for the win!

There is no denying that the last year has been extraordinarily odd and, at the best of times, unstable. Saying that, in amidst all the uncertainty, there has been one special velvety, green guy that has, personally, kept me well rooted. That being the Philodendron hederaceum var. hederaceum, also known as the Philodendron Mican.

Purchased from the House of Kojo around this time last year, before the country got put into a national lockdown, I brought home my Philodendron Mican. This velvet leaf beauty originates from Central America and the Caribbean and is truly the gifts that keeps on giving. He prefers bright light but does extremely well in non-direct sunlight too. Trust me, I have thoroughly tested my Micans endurance over the last year and can confidently say that they are robust little guys. A year on, and I am still in absolute awe of him. Initially attracted to his long velvet-textured, heart-shaped leaves and rusty red undertones, I had no idea at just how much I would grow to appreciate his simple presence in my living room. So much so that I often find myself staring into his beautiful green, velvety abyss.

The Mican loves to be placed somewhere where they can dangle. The more room for them to dangle, the more opportunity for them to flourish and grow. Now up to two meters long, my Mican shows no signs of slowing down. As with most Philodendrons, the secret to longevity is to not over water the plant. Although I understand the urges to over water your plant. You love and cherish your plant and just want the best life for them; however, this may eventually lead to root rot, which is not good for the plant’s overall health. So, once a week should do the trick nicely. As we all know, the Mican is part of the wider Philodendron family. Other Mican siblings include the Philodendron Mican Lime. Like the name suggests, this type of Mican is bright and lime like in colour, some would say more eccentric than the velvet Mican. It all just depends on what vibe you are going for in your home.

Anyway, enough of me plant crushing over my Philodendron Mican. To get some Mican magic into your life, the House of Kojo have plenty of these beautiful guys in stock, waiting to be shipped off to their forever homes. Trust me on the Philodendron Micans. You will not regret it!

Loved your article! I learned a lot and appreciated reading about how therapeutic this plant is for you. I only recently bought a small one, so hopefully mine will get as big as lush as yours!
