about this product
about this product
'Wildfire Wasabi' is wild rocket with the heat turned up: dark green, serrated leaves with a hot, mustardy kick that Piccolo bills as its spiciest rocket. The name refers to that horseradish-like bite rather than any link to true wasabi. Diplotaxis tenuifolia is a cut-and-come-again crop, so a short row or a trough gives handfuls of young leaves for weeks. Use them in mixed salads, on pizza after it leaves the oven, or blitzed into a punchy rocket pesto. If plants run to flower, the small yellow blooms are edible too.
Sowing and growing
- Sow outdoors March to September, little and often, for a steady supply
- Depth: 5mm; thin to 10 to 20cm apart
- Germination: 5 to 10 days
- Position: sun or light shade in moist, well-drained soil; light shade slows bolting in midsummer
- Height: about 20cm
- Harvest: young leaves from 30 to 40 days after sowing; late summer sowings crop into winter under cloches
- Short-lived hardy perennial
- Cover with fleece to keep flea beetles off
What you receive: a packet of about 2,000 seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.
Pair it with our lemony Large de Belleville sorrel for a sharp salad mix, protect rows with fleece and growing equipment, or browse all our vegetable and herb seeds.
