Zinnia 'Peppermint Stick' Seeds

'Peppermint Stick' is a vintage zinnia, around since the 1950s, whose flowers are flecked and streaked with red over cream, white, yellow and orange, so no two blooms look quite the same. Zinnia elegans 'Peppermint Stick' carries double and semi-double flowers on long, straight stems, made for cutting: the more you pick, the more it flowers. Grow a row for the vase, or mix it into sunny borders and large pots, where butterflies and bees visit all summer.

Sowing and growing

• Sow indoors April to May at about 20°C, in modules to avoid disturbing the roots
• Or sow direct outdoors late May to June once the soil has warmed
• Depth: 5mm
• Germination: 5 to 10 days
• Plant out in early June after the last frosts, 25cm apart
• Position: full sun and shelter, in well-drained soil
• Height: about 70cm, with a spread of 20cm
• Flowers: July until the first frosts; regular cutting keeps them coming
• Half-hardy annual
